Provenance
Provenance:Stair & Company, LondonNote: The present lot showcases design elements characteristic of London cabinetmaker, Giles Grendey. Grendey largely created “solid, well-designed, middle-class goods for the home,” with a minority of those works having “idiosyncratic carved decoration and shaped panels.” [1] In this example, each of the upper doors is composed of a large central shaped panel inset with a mirror. The panel's unusual form is repeated in some of Grendey’s labelled works. Carved elements such as the molding bordering the mirrors, the fine dentil molding decorating the broken pediment, and ogee bracket feet supporting the cabinet similarly appear in works attributed to Grendey. This visual congruence in design and skillful execution tie this work stylistically to Grendey.See Sotheby's, STYLE London: Furniture, Ceramics, Silver, Clocks & Works of Art, 9 November 2021, lot 125.
